Abstract

Floating platform for operations at sea, particularly oil prospecting and well drilling in relatively deep water comprises two floating hulls connected by a platform above them so as to constitute a catamaran type ship, the platform having an aperture in which a pivotable fitting is supported by a Candan joint and in turn supports a freely suspended (pendulum-type) column, the lower end of which is submerged in the sea, so that its articulated suspension permits it to retain a fixed orientation regardless of the rolling or pitching of the ship. The platform provides a well-drilling assembly, particularly suitable for short term use at any one location e.g. for drilling test boreholes in the sea bed, before transferring it to a new location. The construction is relatively simple and the costs of installation and removal are minimal.
