Abstract

Appts. for dewatering a paper pulp suspension on the moving mesh sieve of a papermaking machine, comprises (a) an elongated strip woth a front surface supporting, and mounted transversely to the direction of motion of, the sieve, followed in this transverse direction by a re-entrant surface connected to the front surface by a surface making an angle with the first surface of >5 degrees, ca. 90 degrees; and (b) a second elongated strip of similar construction to the first placed at such a distance therefrom that the sieve approaches but is not normally supported by the recessed surface, but is suspended between the two front surfaces, the distance between the sieve and the re-entrant surface being not greater than that necessary to form hydraulic water barrier between them when a reduced pressure is applied, whereby flow of liq. between them in inhibited and dewatering by suction is confined to the section of sieve between this water barrier and the next surface on which the sieve is supported. Appts. combines the advantages of known dewatering strips which are easily renewed with dewatering rolls which facilitate the maintenance of the pulp suspension in motion and prevents the prodn. of a web of variable thickness.
