Abstract

To reduce the noise which occurs when fluid passes through a valve, the circular seal, carried by the valve spindle is made of a soft elastic rubber or plastic. Its form is cylindrical, with the end which faces the valve seat closed by a circular disc. When the valve opens, the dynamic fluid pressure deflects the centre of the seal disc towards the spindle. Any noise vibration in the fluid stream are thus dampened since the seal acts like a hydropneumatic shock absorber. A further advantage of the use of soft seal material is the avoidance of shear stress along the seal edge when the valve is closed, thus increasing the seal life.
