Abstract

High sulphur mattles contg. Ni are refined in a bottom blown converter by a process having a first oxygen blowing phase using air, oxygen enriched air or pure oxygen using a jet which can be surrounded by a current of e.g. fuel or oil to protect the refractory against wear, followed at much lower sulphur contents by refining phase(s) using double or multiple jets with a main flow of a mixt. of oxygen and a fluid giving a diluting effect on the sulphurous gas, surrounded by a peripheral flow of fluid to protect against wear). Very low sulphur contents are possible without prodn. of excess high wetting NiO in the slag.
