Abstract

Overbased detergent additives for lubricants are prepd. by (a) reacting a mixt. of sulphonic acids contg. at least one amino acid of formula (I): (where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, pref. a 6-22C aliphatic radical, n = 0-4; p = 0 when n = 0 and p=0-2 when n is not =0, p prf. being 0 in a synthetic or mineral oil with excess oxide or hydroxide of Li or a Group IIA metal to form an oil-soluble sulphonate salt, and (b) carbonating as much as possible of the excess metal oxide or hydroxide without carbonate pptn. and separating the rest from the reaction mixt. By use of (I) the amt. of the excess oxide or hydroxide that can be carbonated before carbonate pptn. occurs is greatly increased (e.g. 75-97% compared with 40-70% in the absence of (I)), so that the basicity reserve of the additive is increased (e.g. by 40-50%; the additives also have improved anticorrosion and dispersant properties.
