Substd. 3, 3-diphenyl-2-pyrrolidone of formula (I) or its salt: (where X = phenyl; n = 0, 1 or 2; R1 = H or 1-3C alkyl; R2 and R3 = H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or aralkyl or together with the N atom form a heterocycle which may contain another heteroatom), is useful as analgesics, spasmolytics, vasodilators, coronary dilators etc. (I) is prepd. by treatment at 150-240 degrees C of alpha, alpha-diphenyl gamma-butyrolactone with 1.5-3 times the stoichiometric quantity of (II).
