Abstract
Differential pressure across a butterfly valve in a fluid conduit creates a large closing couple. This should be reduced to minimize the power requirement of the valve operating motor. The method proposed modifies the assembly with a deflector on the lower forward vane face (13) and a mating deflector (15) in the lower valve body. alpha and beta are the respective angles through which deflectors extend and J the annular gap width between them. The annular gap remains constant through the valve movement and the vane is a circular disc moving within a generally spherical housing.
