Abstract

Bearings comprise a polyphenylene sulphide layer on a substrate, pref. of steel with an Al or Al alloy interlayer, or of Al (alloy). The coating is applied as a powder, thin film or spray, and is pref. bonded to the metal by rolling or melting. The coatings are very tough, ductule and extremely insoluble. The coated metal can be formed to the required shape without damage. Tedious and expensive application of metal coatings by electroplating is avoided, and loss of soft metals, e.g. tin or indium, by diffusion into the metal substrate is eliminated.
