Abstract

Spreader vehicle for highway maintenance, e.g. gritting of ice, has sealed hopper(2) and twin alternative orifices(8), (20) permitting the dispersal of either granules or liquid e.g. a solution of calcium chloride. The base of the hopper constitutes a longitudinal chute contg. an archimedean screw(7) which feeds grit etc; the downstream end of the chute returning vertically down as a pipe(8) outfalling onto pref. spinning dispersal platform(14). The outfall pipe is valved at mid height(19) after branching out at a lesser dia.(20) to form the alternative liquid outlet: this latter conduit also incorporating a valve(21), pref. actuated by hydraulic piston; hydraulic drive(9) etc. with reducers and dividers also being utilised to drive the screw etc. High speed screw rotation for cleaning.
