Abstract
With increasing need for sensitive earth leakage trips the stability of operation becomes more important when handling fault currents of 20 milli-amps. Current peaks, usually capactive, can trip the breaker even though the current would not last sufficiently long to be a hazard. This circuit prevents this whilst giving high sensitivity. It consists of a toroidal transformer with, in the case of a single phase system, a pair of balancing windings in the line and neutral feeds. Unbalance is detected by a third winding connected to a circuit breaker. A fourth winding which gives the impulse protection is connected to either a pair of back to back diodes or a 0.6v Zener diode. An RC circuit is also connected across the diodes.
