Abstract

A machine (1) for inserting documents into envelopes, is located end to end with another machine (2) for attaching e.g. address labels to the envelopes, the gap between them being bridged by a transfer device (3). The labelling machine (2) is mounted on wheels so that the gap between can be varied to suit the size of the envelopes. This machine is connected to the drive unit (13) of the insertion machine by a drive shaft (14) which incorporates two separate cardan joints which are bolted onto end portions of the drive shaft. An intermediate length of the drive shaft consists of a rod part (14) which slides telescopically inside a hollow part (32) with a key forming the drive connection between them, thus permitting the adjustment between the machines. An alternative design has a chain drive between the output shaft of the drive unit and the cardan shaft.
