Abstract

monomer with c=c bonds is dissolved in an organic liquid and polymerised to a polymer (I) which is insoluble in or on-y slightly swollen by the liquid, in presence of a dissolved copolymer (II) contg. 0.1-10 wt.% 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro 4,7-methano indenyl (meth)acrylate-(5) (III). Amount of (II) is pref. 2-30 wt.% of (I), and it is pref. derived from 0.5-6 wt.% acrylate (III), 70-90% 1-8C alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid, opt. mixed with vinyl aromatics, 5-20% 10-20C alkyl (meth)acrylate esters, and 0-10% other monomers with c=c bonds. (I) is made from monomers with c=c bonds, eg. (meth)acrylic acids or esters, vinyl halides or esters, allyl esters and/or vinyl aromatics. The dispersions have relatively low viscosities with polymer contents of 20-70 (40-55) wt.% and are suitable as coatings, impregnants and adhesives, the coatings having good gloss, high hardness and solvent resistance.
