Abstract

Methane and cpds., with a b. pt. lower than that of methane, are sepd. from natural gas contg. hydrocarbons with a higher b. pt., such as ethane, propane and butane, by a process based on adsorption by activated carbon or by absorption on washing with methanol. The liquefied natural gas from a reservoir is brought up to a press. of 100 atmos. and is heated in an exchanger by heat from the prods. of the sepn., and in another exchanger by a supplementary heating fluid, to 240 degrees K before passing into the adsorber contg. activated carbon. Whilst this adsorber is in operation, the contents of another adsorber can be regenerated, by reducing the press. to 40 atmos., to obtain a mixt. of methane and ethane; after giving up its heat this is brought up to a press. of 100 atmos. and fed back into the natural gas stream. In the absorption process the gases with a b. pt. higher than that of methane are sepd. in a column where they are washed with methanol. The fraction at the top of the column is rich in methane; it is heated and injected directly into the gas main. Process is economical in the consumption of energy because all the impure intermediate prods. are re-liquefied without the use of additional energy; the gas losses are practically nil.
