Abstract

The catalyst systems consist of (A) a solid cpd. of a transition metal of sub gps. IVa, Va and VIa, in which the metal is (partly) not in the highest valency state, pre-activated by treatment with Mg and mono-halogen hydrocarbon, and (B) a co-catalyst of >=1 metal-organic cpd. of Gp. II or III metals. (A) is pref. a trivalent Ti cpd. of formula Ti(OR)mX3-m, (in which R is 2-8C alkyl, X is halogen, pref. Cl, and m is 0-3) or VCl3 or BRr3. The halogenated hydrocarbon is of formula CyH2y+1X (in which X is Cl or Br, and y is 1-12) and pre-activation is with depassivated Mg. in molar ratio to halogenated hydrocarbon of 1 : 0.5-10 (1-4), and to transition metal cpd. of 1 : 0.1-10 (0.25-2).
