Abstract

Labels are fixed to plastic bottles by a gum coating which does not affect the bottle matl. chemically, but forms keys in grooves or other recesses in the bottle surface. For bottles of polyethylene or PVC, gums should be based on gum arabic, fish, casein or galactose glues, wood resins, latex or vinyl resin compsns. free of any solvents which would attached the bottle matls. Dextrin based gums are pref. Label key is sufficient to withstand normal handling, but allows label to be removed by shear or complete or partial tearing, and for gum to be removed by washing to allow ready re-use of bottles or reclamation of bottle matl. without label contamination.
