Abstract

The filter element comprises an open-work cylindrical former, e.g. a rigid case of longitudinal bars between annular flanges, on which is tightly wound a helix of stainless steel wire with adjacent coils touching each other and secured by tack welds. The coils may be seated in notches around the former, spaced at a helical pitch equal to the dia. of the wire; the coils are ground down radially to produce clearances between the coils as grinding depth exceeds half the dia. of wire. The rigid, smooth, cylindrical element is ideally suited to automatic, rotary scraping to remove filter cake.
