Abstract

An etching compsn for treating a substrate prior to a metallising process comprises (1) an alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide, (2) >=1 org. liqs. and (3) a surfactant. The substrate is degreased, treated with the above compsn, sensitised, activated, chemically coated with metal ion and the electrolytically coated with the required metal. The etching compsn can be used with a variety of substrate such as plastics (ABS, epoxies, polyamides etc), wood, paper, cork, glass, ceramics, asbestos etc.
