Abstract

The conventionally designed fuel rod "bundle" assembly has web type spacer gratings and on the tops of these gratings sets of orthogonal thin strips of sheet metal with shaped pairs of wings such that they form crosses with flattened pointed arms whose edges are curved tapers and when curved upwards from horizontal sections these edges lie approximately parallel to the outer curved surfaces of the fuel rods within the meshes of the spacer gratings and thus define narrow annular gaps through which the coolant is constrained to flow in laminar mode over the fuel surface so increasing the thermal transfer uniformity and preventing formation of hot-spots.
