Abstract

An extractive distillation method for separating aromatic hydrocarbons from a mixture containing also non-aromatic hydrocarbons consists of combining a hot solvent with the mixt. in an extractive distillation zone, thus producing an aromatic-rich extract. stream and a non-aromatic raffinate top fraction. Water is stripped from a solvent-Contg. dild. aq. stream in a pressurised stripper zone. The quantity of aromatic hydrocarbons removed in the non-aromatic top fraction is controlled as follows: (a) at least a portion of the hot solvent is passed through a reheater to the water stripper zone, where at least a portion of the diltd. solvent-contg. aq. stream is evapd. and the hot solvent is cooled; (b) at least a portion of this cooled solvent is recycled to the upper part of the extractive distillation column.
