Abstract

H2 is prepd. by passing a mixt. of methanol vapour and steam over a catalyst at 150-350 (180-300) esp. 200-250 degrees C and normal or elevated press., and removing unused steam and CO2 from the formed gas mixt. Pref. the catalyst contains Cu as main components, together with Zn, Mn, Mg, Ca, Al, Ti and/or Cr. These metals are present initially in the catalyst in the form of oxides or carbonates, and the catalyst is treated with H2 at 200 degrees C before use. The conversion is effected by (a) reacting methanol and steam at 250-350 esp. 260-300 degrees C, (b) opt. adding water to lower the temp., and (c) reacting the mixt at 250, esp. 200-230 degrees C. The molar ratio of water to methanol is >5. The reaction is effected at a pressure of 50 esp. 1-25 kg/cm2. Relatively small amounts of H2 are economically produced in a simple, rapid process at low temps.
