Abstract

Title cpds. of formula: where the OH group is in the 4, 5, 6 or 7-position, are active, esp. against Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba dysenterial and colibacilli, also M. tuberculosis. The lethal concentration against T. vaginalis is 25-100 mu g/ml, against E. dysenteria is 10-100 mu g/ml. Given as tablets contg. 5-800 mg, as capsules, suppositories or as an ointment. May also be used for disinfection or sterilising. Prepd. by demethylation of corresponding methoxy compounds, with pyridinium chloride. The 4-methoxy-2-nitrobenzofuran intermediate is also new.
