Abstract

Binders for the prodn. of metallurgical coke from non-caking coals and/or carbonaceous oil residues, e.g. petroleum coke, with a volatile content of 20%, are produced by oxidising asphaltic petroleium residues in the presence of 5-30 vols. of air or O2 diluted with an inert gas (pref. preheated) at 200-350 degrees C until a friable prod. with a softening point >125 degrees C and a penetration index (100g/25 degrees C/5 sec.) of 0-5 is obtd. The oxidn. is pref. carried out in the presence of a catalyst selected from: (a) the oxides, and (finely divided) halides of a metal such as Fe, Co, or Mn; or (b) naphthenic, trimethylacetic or trimethylpentanoic acid. The asphaltic residues may be obtd. by vacuum distn. and/or solvent extn. of paraffinic and/or naphthenic oils or thermally cracked paraffinic oils, and may be mixed with various other petroleum and/or coal-tar prods.
