Abstract

The coating materials consist of (A) an inert liq. carrier (B), 0.2-25 wt.% based on (A) of a colloidal oxide of a metal or metalloid with av. particle dia 0.5 mu and BET-N2 surface ar of >=50 m2/g which has been made hydrophobic by treatment with an org. Si cpd and contains >=0.5 wt.% carbon from the treatment, and (C) >=1 resinous binder with particles dia. 500 mu in amt of 25-200 wt.% based on (B) if dissolved or dispersed in liq. form in (A), or 43-4900 wt.% if dispersed in solid form. (A) may be a volatile org. solvent or mainly water (B) is pref. pyrogenic or ppted. silica and contains >=2% carbon. After application, (A) is removed and (C) is allowed to spread over the surface and set, heat being usually applied if (C) consists of solid particles. The coated surfaces possess sufficient abrasion resistance for normal handling during transport and use.
