Abstract

A thermal insulation material in which rigid closed cells are embedded in a weakly cross-linked elastomeric matrix, the rigid cells being of phenolic resin. The material, for submersible clothing, contains a fixed amount of air in the closed cells. The elastomer may be a polyurethane, partic. a polyester polyurethane or a thiokol catalysed by PbO2. The closed cells contain air of vol. 40-50% of the total volume of the material. The flexible material may be coated externally and internally with a polyurethane varnish bonded to a thin sheet of neoprene.
