Abstract

Azo dyes (I): where K is the residue of a coupling component, and esp where K = (II) where R1 and R2 = alkyl or aralkyl or H, R3 = H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, or aryloxy, R4 = H, alkyl, alkoxy, CN, alkylsulphonyl, sulphamoyl, amino, acylamino or carbamoylamino grp. Specific. dyes have R1=R2 = CH2CH2-O-COOCH3 and R3=R4=H; R1 = C2H5, R2 = C2H4-C6H5 and R3=R4=H; and R1 = C2H5, R2 = C2H4OCOCH3, R3=R4=H. The dyes are made by reacting diazotised 2,4-dicyano-3,5-dimethylaniline with suitable coupling agent, H-K chosen from phenols, naphthols, aminonaphthalenes, acetylacetic acid ester anilides, pyrazolones, indoles, quinolines, pyridones, enolisable ketones and (esp.) aminobenzenes. Prods. are mainly red, yellow or violet dyes useful for dyeing synthetic fibres and fabrics of cellulose tri-and 2 1/2-acetate, polyurethanes, aromatic polyesters and (esp.) polyamides. Dyes contg. the ammonium gp. in the molecule are useful for dyeing polyacrylonitrile and other vinyl cpds
