Abstract

Pt catalysts, with optional addns. of noble metals, are made by heating hexachloroplatinum solns. to boiling and adding a colloid, esp. gelatine, and an inert carrier, esp. graphite powder. The soln. is reduced using excess formaldehyde in alkaline medium, the catalyst is filtered, washed and activated with H2 in acid soln., pref. in the presence of a small amt. of ferricyanide. On exhaustion, the catalyst can be regenerated and reactivated. The materials are esp. suited for reduction of NO, NO2, alkyl nitrites, etc. with H2 for production of hydroxylamine.
