Abstract
Synthesis gas (CO + H2) is made by non-catalytic process comprising partial oxidn. of liquid hydrocarbon fuels with oxygen-rich gas and steam. Process is economic in that steam generation is by cooling of effluent streams and hydrocarbon feed is used as a first scrubbing agent. Also, any oil loss in a second stage water scrubbing is recovered, and removal of carbon from quench water as in prior art processes is not required. Reaction is carried out in unpacked reactor at 1800-3000 degrees F. The effluent is first cooled to 400-550 degrees F (above dew point of water) by indirect heat exchange, and then scrubbed with 1-10 gals hydrocarbon fluid per 1000 cu. ft. gas (where fluid is fresh liquid hydrocarbon fuel) at temps. above the dew point of water in effluent gas to remove particulate carbon, followed by recycle of the fluid-carbon slurry as feedstock for the process. Also the effluent may be further scrubbed with water (1-10 gals/1000 cu. ft) at 100-500 degrees F to condense any hydrocarbon vapours, the liquid prod. then being heated and fed to the reaction zone. All process stages are operated at about equal press. in range 100-3000 psig.
