Abstract
Sodium-sulphur accumulator using a sodium-beta-Al2O3 solid electrolyte and having Na+ ions migrating through the electrolyte towards the positive compartment, whereby between the solid electrolyte and the molten sodium a medium is interposed which presents a conduction mechanism which is exclusively ionic for Na+ ions e.g. NaOH, NaBr or NaI. This prevents the neutralisation of Na+ ions in the solid electrolyte during charge, a defect which causes fissure of the Al2O3, and thus vastly increases the life of the battery.
