Abstract

Tert. amines (I) are produced by adding a sec. N,N-diaromatic amine (II) to a mxit. of NaH and dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO), forming the Na salt of II; reacting the mixt. with an aralkyl halide (III) completely; and isolating the I formed. Good yields of high purity prod. are obtd. I are stable for prolonged periods at elevated temp. e.g. up to 260 degrees C. The pref. molar ratios are II/DMSO 1:1-1.1 and II/III 1:1. Both II and III can have substd. opt. condensed aromatic gps. and II may be a phenothiazine (deriv.).
