Abstract

Device is partic. intended for the removal of finely-divided solid matter from the liquid portion of sewage and chemical sludges. The suspension is first flocculated. Sepn. is effected in a multistage screw press with a permeable cylindrical jacket surrounding the screw. In the process the sludge is subjected both to press. and to a vigorous agitation. The suspension is first fed, together with the flocculating agents, into a cascade mixer; it falls, by gravity, through a hopper into the endless screw press which is divided into a number of stages and is surrounded by a permeable envelope. The dia. of the latter is adapted to the different stages of the screw. A number of retaining rings project into the screw channel and cause the solid matter to be compacted with an increased sepn. of the liquid. A press. cone is provided at the discharge outlet which can be closed on starting unitl an initial press. is built-up in the channel. Once the machine is working continuously the cone is not longer required.
