Abstract

The semis are made by casting into one mould, into which is placed initially a slag mixt, followed by the first portion of liq. metal, it is left in the mould allowing the salg to form a protective liq. layer on its top and also a metallic solidification crust below the slag layer, the temp of which is higher than that of the slag on top, but lower than the solidification temp of a subsequent layer of liq. metal, which is poured on top. This is repeated several times each time after a solid metal crust has formed on the top of the last layer. The method is economical and ensures a good interface bond between the layers of different metals.
