Abstract

Tyres featuring an annular layer or rib of abrasion resistant rubber on the outside of the carcass sidewalls pref. at a radial distance corresponding to the maximum width of the tyre. Pref. the sidewall tread features surface dimples or slits which indicates the safe degree of sidewall wear by erosion to a smooth face. The face of the sidewall tread may be oblique w.r.t. the radial axis. Pref. the side tread increases the wall thickness by ca 65% and extends over 18-20% of the radial depth of the carcass. Esp. for buses or large goods vehicles which made frequent kerbside halts or have difficulty in negotiating narrow bends so that sidewall damage against kerbs or concrete bollards does not shorten tyre life compared with normal rolling tread wear.
