Abstract

Manipulator assembly for a nuclear reactor of the type having a rotating platform supporting a series of reactor cores in the interior of a vessel contg. a liquid metal (e.g. Na) coolant in such a way as to permit their displacement from their operating positions to a single charging position comprises (a) a tubular manipulating pot open at the bottom, having an annular internal gallery for intermediate storage of fuel elements, and suspended in an opening in the upper closure cover of the reactor vessel, (b) a sealed enclosure filled with a neutral gas mounted above the manipulating pot and a shaft or well communicating with the external environment together deliminting the charging/discharging station for the reactor (c) first and second manipulator arms for transferring the fuel elements between the core and the intermediate storage gallery and between the latter and the exernally connected well, and (d) a device for controlling the pressure of the natural gas in the charging station to a first value which causes liq. metal to flow from the lower end of the manipulating pot into the reactor vessel until the lifting heads of the fuel elements in the core are uncovered, a second value causing flow only until the lifting heads of the fuel elements in the storage gallery are uncovered and a value at which the metal and neutral gas are in equilibrium at the same level as in the reaction vessel.
