Abstract
C-S cpds. are converted to H2S by contacting a gas stream of a) C-S cpd(s) such as COS and CS2, and b) a H2 source, at least sufficient to convert this cpd. to H2S, with a Co-Mo catalyst on a carrier at 260-427 degrees C until (part of) the C-S cpd. is converted to H2S. This treatment pref. is used in conjunction with a modified Claus process for S mfr. The Al2O3 bed in the Claus process has increased life if the charge is freed from C-S cpds.
