Abstract
Continuous glass metal oxide fibres are made from low-viscosity melts contg. 20 wt.% SiO2, max and having at their liquidus temp. Tm a melt viscosity below 100 poises and above the logarithmic value of In the prefd. method the melt is extruded into a chamber filled with propane which decomposes on the fibre surfaces forming a C-layer which holds it together until it is solidifed. Low viscosity melt glass compsns. have to be used since this is a characteristic of all high strength high Youngs Modulus glass compsns.
