Abstract

The appts. consists of a rotating cylindrical furnace enclosed in a concentric casing with a space between them. A heating oven is enclosed in the space to heat the furnace from outside. The metal oxide is introduced at a fixed rate at one end, reduced in the furance and reduced metal removed at the other end. The internal wall of the furnace is lined with a layer of material selected from the following: Al oxide, mullite, silica, or Zr oxide. This prevents deposition of metal on the inside of the furnace and increases the degree of redn. while saving reducing gas.
