Abstract

Synthetic slag for use on top of an ingot during continuous casting of steel comprises a powdered mixture of primary materials and additives such that the slag, once molten comprises 25-70% SiO2, 20-54% CaO, 5.25% Al2O3. The slag has just the right combination of properties to produce a lubricacting effect between the metal being cast and the water cooled copper mould without disturbing the natural cooling curve of the cooling metal or causing run outs of liquid metal or cracks in the casting.
