Abstract
Parts of the active layer are transparent to the photons excited within it by incident X-rays Gamma-rays or neutrons so that a large proportion of those photons can escape from the layer to a second layr of material which is excited by them into emitting electrons. These parts are surrounded by optically reflective coatings to prevent transverse travel of the photons. The phosphor is either in the form of short parallel crystalline rods stacked together over the whole area of the screen and extending through its thickness or used to fill short parallel glass tubes. The phosphors are Cel activated with Te or Na, SeI with Th, LiI with Eu, or KI with Th.
