Abstract

Pyrrolidone-2 polymers, capable of forming white fibres by extrusion when molten, after heating a 5g. sample at 270 degrees C under a press. of 6.7 x 106 dynes/cm2 in a Slocumb Melt Indexer having a single spinneret hole of 0.508 mm dia. and 2.03mm length for 4 minutes, form a continuous filament for 3 pref. 7, minutes after opening the spinneret. The polymer is made by polymerising pyrrolidone-2 in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an alkaline polymerisation catalyst and an addition product of CO2 with a salt of a lactam, chosen from salts of alkaline metals, quat. ammonium salts of pyrrolidone-2 and salts of caprolactam in an amount 0.01% of the pyrrolidone monomers.
