Method, which involves decreased hydrogenation of the carbonyl, is to hydrogenate under substantially anhyd. conditions at atm. press. to 1000p. s.i.g. pref. 10-250 p.s.i.g. and 70-250 degrees C pref. 100-150 degrees C in the presence of a 1-10 wt% Pd on alumina catalyst and 0.5-5.0 equiv. of potassium salt of a weak acid based on Pd in catalyst.
