Abstract

Marking process, e.g. for marking cutting lines on steel plate prior to flame cutting, in which fine particles are applied to an article which is then irradiated by a laser beam to cause particles to adhere to it, those not adhering being removed from its surface. Spec. a thin layer of fine, light-absorbent, thermoplastic particles is deposited on the article to be marked and irradiated by a laser beam to cause fusion of the particles in the required pattern or design, unmelted particles being thereafter removed.
