Abstract

Abrasive grains of alpha-Al2O3 crystals in Al2O3/ZrO2 eutectic are prepd. by firing at 1500-1900 a mixture of graded alpha-Al2O3 crystals, fine powders of Al2O3/ZrO2 and opt. fluxing addns. of TiO2, siO2 Fe2O3 and CaO. The mixture is granulated, extruded and fired in na oxidising atmosphere for 15 mins. In resin bonded wheels the abrasive is superior to corundum or fused Al2O3/ZrO2 mixtures for grinding steel billets. ingots etc.
