Abstract

The appts. comprises a column filled with Rasching rings and divided into two main parts. Cl2 and H2O react in the lower half of the upper part forming chlorine-water of concn. >2 gpl, pref. 3-4 gpl. which is siphoned to the bottom of the lower portion of the column. Excess Cl2 is scrubbed by the counter current of cold water in the upper half og the upper part of the column. The chlorine water feed siphoned to the base of the column through an otherwise imperforate partition is immediately contacted with an aq. feed of NaClO2. Reaction between the Cl2-H2O and NaClO2 occurs mainly in this region and in the central part of the lower column; dilution water is introduced at the top of the lower portion which effectively stops reaction, and the aq. soln. of ClO2 collected at the top of the lower column from where it is recovered via a siphon. Process yields a pure product with little atmos. pollution or risk of explosion. Feed rates are readily adjusted so that compsn. and output are easily controlled.
