Cpds. of formulae (I and II): where R' = (CH2)nX, X = CO2H or a deriv, hal or OH, n = 1-7, Y' = CHO or CO2H or a deriv. and Z' = CHO, CO2H or a deriv. CH2OH, CH3CO, CH3CO2 and/or OH, are intermediates for prostaglandins. (II) are prepd. by Diels Alder condensation of cyclopentandiene and R'CH=CHY', and are converted to (I) by oxidative fission followed by appropriate modification of Z'.
