Abstract

[Also in Division H1] Surfaces of articles comprising polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E.) fibres or particles are bonded by coating at least one surface with finely divided particles of a thermoplastic resin having a melting point below the sintering point of P.T.F.E., pressing the surfaces together and heating the composite to melt the particles. An air cathode may be made by laminating a porous web of P.T.F.E. fibres which contains graphite or catalytic metal particles to a second porous web of P.T.F.E. fibres with an expander metal screen sandwiched between them. The particles may be colloidal polyethylene, polymonochlortrifluoroethylene or a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene and these may be applied from a suspension or colloidal solution. Preferably some of the fine particles are incorporated in the web. Other fillers, pigments, resins or mineral fibres may also be incorporated in the web. The bonding process may be used to join P.T.F.E. fabrics in a lapped seam to form garments.
