Abstract

Racemic, 1R, 2R or 1S, 2S trans-3,3-dimethyl-2-(2-R1, 2-R2-vinyl)cyclopropanecarboxylic acids of formula (I):- (where R1, R2 = alkyl (C1-C6), aryl or aralkyl; or R1 + R2 + attached C-atom form opt. substd.-carbocyclic ring (C3-C7)), are prepd. by condensing an alkyl trans-3,3-dimethyl-2-formylcyclopropnae-1-carboxylate with a cpd. of formula (II):- (where X = Cl, Br, I; Ar = opt. substd. aryl) in the presence of a strong base and finally saponifying the ester to give the desired acid. Esters of the acids, e.g. with allethrolone, pyrethrolone and 5-benzylfur-3-ylmethanol are useful insecticides.
