Abstract
The Raney nickel is first deactivated by vacuum baking or careful oxidation with a salt such as KIO3, KBrO3. It is first exposed to argon and may then be safely handled in air. The catalyst is codeposited with a fluorinated polymer or a sintered metal support and covered with a porous layer of a polymer such as PTFE. The composite is heated at 200-450 degrees C in argon. The technique permits the use of high quality Raney nickel catalysts without danger of pyrophoricity.
