Dioxocycloalkanes are reduced to the corresponding 1-beta-hydroxy-3-oxocycloalkanes with the aid of Schizosaccharomyces (particulalry S pombe, ATCC 2476, 2478 or 14548, specif. the first two). O Specif., cpds. bioreduced are sym which give the opticall active (where R is (m)ethylene R1 is CH3 or C2H5,R2 is a C3-C18 aliphatic group or The products are intermediates in steroid chemistry.
