Abstract

A clear, stable bath for bleaching paper pulp comprises an aqs. solution of sodium silicate, NaOH and H2O2, to which has been dissolved initially a soluble Mg salt and a sequestrant. Spec. the Mg salt is the chloride, or esp. epsomite, and the sequestrant is the penta Na salt of diethylene triamine penta acetic acid, used in the ratio sequestrant: salt of 10 to 40. The solution can be made up using hard water without scaling of tubes or blockage of nozzles; homogeneity of bleaching is greatly improved.
