Abstract

Metal tube is insulated with a surrounding continuous sheath of foamed plastics, directly produced on the tube by extrusion and expansion. Pref. the tube is steel. The plastics is closed-cell and is polyethylene, P.V.C. or polystyrene. The tube is passed through an extrusion die and the plastics, foamed by blowing agent, has its outer surface conformed to gauge by a cooled pipe. A second sheath of non-expanded plastics may be extruded around the foamed plastics.
